Alphatracks writes on this very topic. I found it interesting that according to the article all Sony Alpha lens are shipped to include a lens hood. I wish Canon did the same.

Essentially you should use a hood to avoid glare in your photos. That’s the why. In response to the when, I keep hoods on all of my lenses and have found no reason to take them off yet.
